The John Howard Society of North Island, an organization that provides programs and support to help children, youth, adults, and families lead safer, healthier lives, is delighted to announce the appointment of Tyler Fainstat as its new executive director.
“We are thrilled to welcome Tyler to The John Howard Society of North Island as our new executive director. He brings a wealth of experience and abundant positive energy,” said Colleen Ross, interim executive director.
Fainstat has a wealth of experience in social services and not-for-profit leadership. He has been executive director of The John Howard Society of Ottawa for the past eight years, and prior to that was executive director of The John Howard Society of Kingston for three years. He also spent almost 10 years working abroad with the international medical humanitarian organization, Médecins Sans Frontières, as a project coordinator, country director, and executive director. Fainstat has a master’s degree in international relations and economics from the London School of Economics and a BA (Hons) in political studies from Trent University.
“Tyler will continue the Society’s long tradition of providing compassionate, flexible services to youth and adults in the region as well as fostering strong community engagement. His wide range of experience will bring fresh ideas, and we are fortunate to have found someone who fits so well with the values of the Society,” said Jay Havelaar, board president.
Fainstat’s recent volunteer roles include board chair, Ottawa Inner City Health; co-chair, Community Advisory Board (CAB) Homelessness, Ottawa; and board treasurer/vice-chair, Ottawa Alliance to End Homelessness.
