Referring a Youth to Compass.

The Compass Program offers a structured, strength-based alternative to custody for youth ages 12 to 18. If you’re working with a youth who could benefit from stability, support, and a clear path forward, here’s everything you need to make a referral.

What Compass provides for youth.

Youth participating in hands-on learning at a community-based attendance program, working one-on-one with a supportive mentor in a warm, structured environment.

Youth referred to Compass live with family caregivers in the community and attend a full-time day program Monday to Friday. They receive individualized programming, counselling, education support, and life skills development, all within a structured, supportive environment designed to help them reset and move forward.

The Program

For youth as an alternative to custody.

Compass – Full-Time Attendance Program

Schedule: Full-time structure with a consistent schedule from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, Monday to Friday.

Housing: Living with family caregivers in the community.

Counselling: Support from primary, clinical, and substance use counsellors.

Education: Individualized learning plans with the ability to earn up to 25 school credits.

Employment: Opportunities for volunteer work and paid employment.

Home visits: Approved home visits to practice new skills in home communities.

Location: Campbell River (6-month program).

The Compass program accepts referrals for:

Youth ages 12 to 18.

You can call the program at 250-286-0222 and speak with the clinical counsellor or program manager to find out what the waitlist is, discuss the suitability of your referral, and answer any other questions you may have about the referral and screening process.

A youth may not be eligible for Compass for either of the following reasons:

A youth is deemed to be at high risk for violence to self or others at the time of referral and is not considered safe to reside in a family carehome.

A youth does not have a specific probation condition directing them to attend and successfully complete a full-time attendance program.

The screening committee will make the decision about who is accepted into the program with the final say being the responsibility of the Compass Program Manager. Reasons for the youth being found ineligible will be documented on the screening sheet and communicated to the YPO in a timely manner.
