Is it just for youth or adults also?

It is usually just for youth (up to 19).

They are bachelor suites.

What is included in the rent?

Answer

They are fully furnished suites including beds and kitchenware etc., microwave, toaster, kettle, fridge/freezer, stove/oven. Rent includes wifi and laundry.

Do residents have to meet with the Independent Living Worker?

Answer

Yes. Very frequently at the beginning. Once youth are settled in and doing well, this contact can be as little as once per week.

What are the basic rules?

Answer

There is no curfew for youth who live at Barnett House and residents can come and go as they please. Residents can have only 1 visitor in their suite at a time (unless with permission) and visitors must leave by 11 pm Sunday to Thursday or 12 am Friday and Saturday night (unless with permission). No drugs and alcohol are allowed on the property. No smoking inside the suites. No pets. Suite inspections are arranged for every two weeks. Residents are expected to participate in a school program and/or to make progress on other goals.

What kind of support is given by the Independent Living worker?

Answer

Support is tailored to the individual depending on their needs and goals. There is a very wide range of support offered but most is usually related to learning independent living skills such as banking, budgeting, shopping, cleaning and eating healthy. School is our top priority and support is offered for youth to be successful in this area. Employment is also a common goal.

How is the rent paid?

Answer

Typically rent is paid by the youth’s social worker (MCFD) but in some cases youth may be able to pay the rent on their own (through employment income) or with the help of family.

Do Barnett House residents have group meetings/activities?

Answer

Residents are encouraged to get to know the other youth who live at Barnett House. Group meetings are scheduled occasionally and attendance is strongly encouraged but not mandatory. Sometimes fun activities and/or group meals are planned and these are optional.

How long do youth stay at Barnett House?

Answer

It depends on what is needed for each youth. Sometimes as little as a couple months or sometimes upwards of two years.
