Families for Youth Homes
Headstart, Oasis, 180° Programs
The John Howard Society of North Island currently operates very successful community-based programming that provide a positive family environment for male and female youth ages 14-18. The programs are located in the Campbell River community.
Youth in both programs have a well-defined day program that includes: life management skills development, addiction counselling, extensive recreational programs, creative projects, paid work, work experience placement and volunteer work in the community, and attendance in the program school with a School District #72 teacher.
For the past five years the John Howard Society of North Island has also been successfully operating a Youth Detox and Supportive Recovery program. We are pleased to announce that the John Howard Society of North Island has received funding to expand this program to offer youth ages 12-19 the opportunity to withdraw from substance use while living in family homes in the Campbell River and Comox Valley areas.
Caregivers will provide on-going support, encouragement, and supervision to youth placed in their homes. Emphasis will be on building positive relationships and encouraging a nurturing family environment.
The Society offers 24-hour caregiver support within the context of an integrated case management team. Depending on the program, the team supporting the youth and family may consist of: Program Manager, Youth and Family Resource Worker, Addictions Counsellors, Youth Withdrawal Management Coordinator, Activity Workers, Caregiver Support Worker, the caregiver, biological families, social workers, teachers, Youth Probation Officers, and other professionals who may be involved with the youth.
Funding for these resources are provided by Ministry of Children and Family Development and Vancouver Island Health Authority.
